First Look at Joel Kinnaman as the new RoboCop
Here’s our first look at Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the new RoboCop in José Padilha’s remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic. The film centers on a fatally wounded cop who returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him. Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste co-star. The film is scheduled to hit theaters next August.
Filming is currently underway in Toronto (whoo!) and these shots show off the new RoboCop suit which I’m quite liking (even though I’m definitely in the minority). Kinnaman’s a great actor and while pre-production for the film has been a bit of a mess with its script already receiving a terrible review and Padilha publicly complaining about studio interference, I’m really hoping this one proves to be a worthy remake.
In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.
