Breathtaking First Clip From Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’ (With HD Stills)
Warner Bros. has released an incredibly intense first clip from Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming sci-fi film Gravity. I think I took one breath while watching this. The clip, which also serves as a new trailer, is titled “Detached,” and features Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Astronaut Matt Kowalsky dealing with a catastrophe after a satelite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes.
You’ll notice that the camera never cuts once, a technique that makes this scene even more terrifying to watch because it feels like we’re experiencing this disaster with Ryan and Matt in real time. Cuaron has already said that there will be plenty of extended, uncut scenes in the film, including an opening sequence that runs just shy of twenty minutes. I cannot wait to see this one at TIFF in September. Gravity hits theaters October 4.
Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
