‘Happy Endings’ Recap: You Were Born A Man!
Last week’s two episodes of Happy Endings confirmed something I’ve thought for a long time: Happy Endings remains the funniest show on TV. I think Parks & Recreation is, overall, the best comedy, but I find Happy Endings to be the funniest. Need an example? When Alex took out the Vaseline just before she and Jane were about to fight, I lost myself. Maybe that’s a better example of my sense of humor than the show’s comedy because siblings or friends fighting like that is my favorite sitcom trope (example: this).
The first of the two episodes is the strongest. Everything worked, and I found that it worked so well I’ve watched the episode three times over. This is what this show does to me and I can’t explain it. We’re more than halfway through the season but this episode will be one of the standouts once the season wraps up (I’m saying season and not series because did you see this? Fingers crossed). The entire episode was a big shenanigan and felt like a classic episode of any sitcom that came before it, but, as always, so specifically Happy Endings. And, to beat a dead horse, Elisha Cuthbert is really the star of this show right now. Everyone is aces, even Dave who has come so far, but between her Vaseline moment and her Taken references last week, she’s just killing it. Yes, the material is great but she’s seriously added her own spin to Alex and really made this character the star of the third season.
The second episode was just as good as the first, but felt like any other episode of the show – great, of course, just not a standout. This episode’s strongest plot revolved around Penny and her confrontation with her birth father, played by Andy Richter – a casting decision I was worried about. I’m not Richter’s biggest fan and he’s a sitcom whore really, so it didn’t feel very fresh. With that said, I thought he had wonderful chemistry with Wilson (who was excellent and restrained this episode) and, assuming the wedding closes the season, I can’t wait to see him with Mullaly.
Best lines:
“You look like Alf”
A drawn out and emotional “Syaaaaahhh cyutttte” upon seeing Penny in her wedding dress.
“You were born a man!”
“Duh, ghosts don’t drive”
“No, Krisjahn. K-R-I-S-J-A-H-N. Very common fake gay French name”
