TIFF 2012 has officially begun and my very first screening at the festival was for Rian Johnson’s sci-fi film LOOPER starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, & Emily Blunt. I want to preface this by saying that Looper was by far my most anticipated film of the year (yes, even more so than TDKR & The Avengers) and I’m happy to say that the film delivers in every sense of the word. I’m a sci-fi fanatic and Johnson has crafted a truly compelling, smart, highly entertaining film with a rich story and complex characters. It deserves a second viewing (probably a third and fourth as well) considering it involves time travel and I really can’t wait to revisit this film in soon. I recorded a video blog right after the screening so hopefully you enjoy.
In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.
