Marion Cotillard To Play Lady Macbeth Opposite Michael Fassbender
Marion Cotillard has replaced Natalie Portman as Lady Macbeth in Justin Kurzel’s big-screen adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. She’ll be starring opposite Michael Fassbender (Shame, Inglourious Basterds), who is still attached to play the title role, in the 11th century-set film that will take a “visceral approach to the story including significant battle scenes.” Macbeth will be produced by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (King’s Speech and Shame) with principal photography set to begin in the UK in January 2014.
Cotillard, who won an Academy Award for playing Edith Piaf in “La Vie En Rose,” can next be seen in Guillaume Canet’s “Blood Ties” and James Gray’s “Two Days, One Night.”
Macbeth is Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, and tells the story of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia, and he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler as he is forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of arrogance, madness, and death.
