Weekend Box Office: MADAGASCAR 3 & PROMETHEUS Open Strong with $60M/$50M Respectively
It’s been another strong weekend at the domestic box office with total earnings hitting $175M, up 32% from the same time last year. This is thanks to Madagascar 3 and Prometheus, which opened to $60M and $49.5M respectively. While Prometheus bested Madagascar on Friday, the family friendly flick came in at number one Saturday and will continue to hold up extremely well on Sunday with the added benefit of strong matinée showings. Prometheus played in far less theatres and also carried an R-rating, making its opening weekend take all the more impressive. Despite big problems with the film’s script, I thought Prometheus was visually breathtaking, hugely ambitious, and overall pretty enjoyable. Check back for weekend actuals tomorrow. [via Deadline]
