Baz Luhrmann’s THE GREAT GATSBY Pushed From Christmas 2012 to Summer 2013
Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures announced today that Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby 3D is simply too good to be released this December so they’re pushing it all the way back to $ummer 2013. Exec Dan Fellman on the decision: “Based on what we’ve seen, Baz Luhrmann’s incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald’s American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.” Thanks Dan, what an unexpected and unbiased explanation!
The film was set to open on Christmas Day and would have had to face quite a few competitors in the month of December: Django Unchained, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Les Miserables, Zero Dark Thirty, amongst several others. I always knew that someday The Great Gatsby would end up being a great “summer blockbuster.” (Shudders.) I personally couldn’t care less. I’m looking forward to seeing it but I think I’ll be okay with the extra wait.
