Matthew Vaughn Not Directing X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST; Bryan Singer May Step In
Well, this is a bummer. Matthew Vaughn will not be directing X-Men: Days of Future Past, the sequel to his fantastic 2011 flick X-Men: First Class. And here’s the really bad news: Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-Men films and Superman Returns, may step in to take his place. Of course I enjoyed X2 but I can’t muster up the slightest speck of enthusiasm for Singer anymore especially after what Vaughn did with the prequel.
No official reason was given for his departure but Vaughn is known to be very selective about the projects he directs and in the past has turned down both Thor and First Class (before he changed his mind and returned for the latter). He also decided not to direct Kick-Ass 2 so maybe he’s just the type of director who would prefer to not revisit the same material twice. He’s reportedly been working with Fox and Mark Millar on another one of Millar’s properties: Secret Service.
Vaughn wrote the treatment for Days of Future Past, which was then scripted by Simon Kinberg (yikes), and will serve as a producer for the film alongside Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. Fox still hopes to release the sequel on July 18, 2014.
