TIFF 2012: Video Review for SPRING BREAKERS Starring James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, & Ashley Benson
Spring Breakers may look stupid on the surface – college girls in bikinis drinking, doing drugs, and James Franco looking like Kevin Federline – until you realize who’s behind it. The film was written and directed by Harmony Korine, the same guy who penned the very controversial 1994 film Kids (along with Gummo and a bunch of shorts as well).
While it wasn’t as bold or daring as I had anticipated it to be, the film still offers some nice surprises and it was constantly entertaining. James Franco is the anchor here and he gives a fantastic performance as the hilariously twisted drugs and arms dealer Alien. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoyed it even though I didn’t always like where the story ventured at times. I recorded a video blog right after the screening which you can find below.
James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens star in the wild new film from perennial provocateur Harmony Korine (Trash Humpers), about four flat-broke co-eds whose spring fling in Florida turns into a booze, drug and violence-fuelled bacchanal.
