Misfits Series 4 Episode 1 Recap: ‘Right Where We Left Off’
I had heard the show was coming back for a fourth season with a half-brand new cast, but it completely slipped my mind. How I’ve missed Misfits. This is something I didn’t realize until I heard that theme song for the first time in a long time. It felt good.
The show begins right where it left off, not plot wise but it felt like going back to school for your senior year. You’ve been through this 3 times already and you know the deal and there are the things you love and hate about it, but there’s nothing like your first day back. For those of you unaware, we have two new cast-members on the show, since two characters were sent backing in the third series and Lauren Socha, who played Adele Kelly, was fired for being racist.
Misfits is at a very interesting point in its life. This is the second time it’s added new characters to the show, because of actors leaving for various reasons. This works both for and against the show. This isn’t the cast of Friends where the show works because of the 6 of them; we’re not entirely attached to these characters and they’re easily disposable. With that said, this constant rollercoaster with it’s characters leave the viewer a little distant and that’s always been my thing with Misfits, especially after last season’s self-indulgence. But, let’s enjoy where we are at right now because for the most part, it was a very solid hour of television.
The premiere started with the ending of the episode and then went back to what led to that opening scene. This was troubling at first because this is something usually reserved for post-midseason type episode where the writing can get a bit lazy. We’ve seen this type of episode construction before on countless shows, but it’s never really worked for me. The episode then reverts to 5 hours before that occurred and we get to meet the two new Misfits, Jess and Finn, both who fit in seamlessly, like they’ve been there all along. This is something the show has always been able to do quite well; easily transition someone new into the world of Misfits.
The episode started off lighter than usual, especially after how intense and misguided season 3 ended. That lighter tone quickly darkened near the end of the episode as we find out what kind of creepy secret Finn is keeping. The only thing I would complain about is that Curtis is still alive. I’ve never been a fan of the character; he’s always been the weakest link in the cast (for me) and his character become so uninteresting and now with all the fresh blood in the cast, he seems like the creepy older friend that hangs around all the young kids. What I’m saying is that if he died this series, I’d be fine with that.
God, I’ve missed this show.
Line of the episode: “I think you have a f-cking beautiful penis”
